We're Doing Something New this Year!!
The MAC ASHI Education Committe has existed for over a decade on the cutting edge of seminar presentations. Consistent with our purpose and repuation we've decided to try something new and innovative. We're aware that there are many unanswered questions out there that home inspectors across the continent ponder routinely. We've gone on a quest to gather these questions up, research the answers, and deliver our finding on May 11, 2024. This is a major undertaking and we need your help.
What are your questions. What do you wonder about?
Please take a minute to register for this event. Soon after registration, you will receive a link to an online questionnaire. Please take a moment or three and ask us the question(s) that you have always wondered about. Then join us on May 11. We think you'll be glad you did.

Outline
Structural
The second phase of our program will begin by defining the scope and limitations of an inspection of a building structure. We’ll then address the requirements before moving to discussions of specific common defects and the questions inspectors ask.
Exterior and Interior
Most of phase 3 will address finish-elements both indoors and out. We’ll consider the importance of helping a client recognize that what is apparent is not always what’s important. This discussion will tackle the importance of, and protection against, both wind and water intrusion. We’ll then address the requirements before moving to discussions of specific common defects and the questions inspectors ask.
Roofing
Much of this will be about the simple identification of different roofing types and the timeframes during which each product was popular. We’ll talk about design-life as well as realistic useful lives. Finally, we’ll look at defective installations and failure modes. We’ll then address the requirements before moving to discussions of specific common defects and the questions inspectors ask.
Plumbing
This is the segment where we consider the fundamentals of flow and pressure before applying these concepts to practical applications. We’ll then address the requirements before moving to discussions of specific common defects and the questions inspectors ask.
Report Writing
This promises to be the most provocative session of the day. A former chair of Maryland licensing commission complaints committee and the current chair of the Virginia licensing board bring interesting and eye-opening perspectives of what matters when writing a report and how a poorly-written report might affect a home inspector's future. This session begins with a discussion of the pros and cons of different report-writing formats. We'll then talk about the requirements of the standard. From there we'll use a series of common construction defects to illustrate how a report might be compiled and information shared with the reader.
Electrical
During this segment we’ll address not only the fundamentals of modern electrical systems, but also the history of systems and the evolution of the electrical safety dynamic. We’ll then address the requirements before moving to discussions of specific common defects and the questions inspectors ask.
Heating and Cooling
A significant amount of time will be spent discussing the science of energy and the history of both combustion heating appliances and refrigeration. We’ll talk about different testing protocols and the pros and cons thereof. We’ll then address the requirements before moving to discussions of specific common defects and the questions inspectors ask.
Insulation and ventilation
We will discuss a little bit of the history of our understanding of the purposes of attic and crawlspace insulation and ventilation. We’ll then look at how our understanding of building science informs our newer methods. We’ll then address the requirements before moving to discussions of specific common defects and the questions inspectors ask.
