Matthew D. Dobson
Senior Vice President
Polymeric Exterior Products Association

Matt Dobson has been involved with the housing industry for over 30 years. After graduating from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Building Construction Management, Dobson joined the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB). During his first tenure with NAHB, he worked as an advocate on various issues for the modular, panelized, and log home industries.
Dobson continued his career in southern New England, where he worked for a small log home manufacturer both in operations and as a builder of custom homes. His project management career took him through the inner-city multi-family renovation business in Waterbury, CT, as well as managing the construction of upper-end homes surrounding the Tournament Players Club in Cromwell, CT.
In his current role as Senior Vice President for the Polymeric Exterior Products Association 2004, Dobson works to ensure that polymeric exterior products like cladding and roofing recognized for their superior attributes in various regulatory and issues forums. His specific responsibilities include representing the industry on national building code, sustainability, and energy issues. He serves as a member of the ICC’s Code Development Committee for the International Building Code and past Consensus Committee Member and Task Group Chair for the development of the National Green Building Standard.
He is also the lead staff person for the PEPA Sustainability Committee, which has developed the product category rules for the development of Environmental Product Declarations for cladding. He is currently leading the Revinylize Recycling Collaborative, launched in December of 2023, which seeks to make the post-consumer recycling of rigid vinyl material the norm.
The Codes, Cladding & Soffit, and Proper Inspections:
Learn about polymeric cladding, how the building codes regulate it, andhow to inspect for proper installation. This presentation will dive into the building codes, how wall coverings are treated, and what manufacturers say to ensure proper installation. A number of improper installations will be reviewed and discussed.

Fundamentals of Report Writing:
In this 2-hour course, we'll discuss how to document observations, deficiencies, and limitations in the report for effective client communications. We'll also discuss the pitfalls and even some myths about using photos as effective illustrations to compliment the written word.Â
Log Home Basics:
In this 2-hour course, we learn about the basic construction details of a log home. To help the inspector better understand those differences, we'll discuss how inspectors can identify wood shrinkage, WDOs, and settling of logs that lead to significant structural and deterioration issues in these unique structures.
Foundation Repairs:
Foundation repairs are complex, detailed, and specifically tailored to each home. In this 2-hour class, we'll discuss some of the reasons for structural movement and how engineers and contractors design and implement some common repair solutions. We'll also learn how the inspector can identify evidence of these repairs and effectively communicate their observations to their clients.Â
